This, too, shall pass

There is an ancient Sufi story about a king who wanted something miraculous that would instantly change his state and mood. He asked all the great alchemists and magicians in his country. But nobody had this magical thing for him. Finally, an old sage came forward and gave him a ring. He told the King: “In this ring, there is a magical formula that will change everything instantly.” The King was delighted but was told only to open the ring if there was absolutely no other solution.

Years passed, and the neighbouring country declared war. The King took his troops, but it didn’t look good for his side. In a ferocious battle, he failed to win and got away on his horse to save his life. His beautiful stallion stumbled and broke his leg. So, the King continued on foot. But soon enough, he was in front of a cliff. Nowhere to go; enemies were approaching from the back. And an abyss in the front. Now was THE moment for the ring! He opened it and pulled out a small piece of paper on which was just this short sentence:

“This too shall pass.”

You may ask yourself: Why am I telling you this story? In these times, certainties become uncertain (as in Canada, where having a friendly neighbour to the south is assumed, but is no longer true; democracy is not anymore the norm in the world, and breathing fresh air is all too often taken for granted). What is it that we can rely on?

Knowing that everything changes constantly, while having an inner strength, which, unfortunately, is not a given for all. Especially if you had adverse experiences in the womb and as a child, the foundation for inner strength and stability hasn’t had the chance to develop in the biological system. When this is the case, the person is always on the lookout for danger.

That’s why I love working with the nervous system. To regulate it and build resilience so that the sense of safety can become the new norm for the person whose overwhelming experiences have overtaken them. Then, little things can trigger huge reactions…

Are you ready to try it?

We can also work together virtually.

Sujati touches lower back

What does that look like? I gently touch the person’s back, either directly or virtually, at the lower ribs, to support and provide a safe space for the adrenals and kidneys to relax. This touch is generally very calming and supportive. Since one can’t touch the kidneys or adrenals anyway, it’s intentional touch either way, whether virtually or in person.
